advanced Let Us Get Together standard tuning
My all time favorite Reverend Gary Davis
song. This piece gave me fits at first because of the independent bass line, but once I got it down
it became one of the most exhilarating pieces I have in my repertoire. This is a focus on the independent
thumb, just like the left hand of a stride piano player. This arrangement is the only one on the site
that I couldn't fit on one page. This is because I wanted to document the two versions that the Rev
recorded and put them into one arrangement. You'll notice he handles the theme in a completely different
way the second time through the song starting on line 5. Another amazing trick that Gary Davis does
is the C wrap-around, where he actually has his left hand thumb reach over to the 5th string 3rd fret
(Oouch!!) Remember, just as in "Down To The Banks" take your time and let the movements sink in until
they feel like second nature. One more thing to keep in mind is that Gary Davis played the guitar with
the thumb and index finger of his right hand. Experiment a bit. I'm not a purist when it comes to Gary
Davis's right hand. I play using three fingers with my right hand, but when it comes down to the left
hand I try my best to emulate what the master did. After you hear this on the cd and learn how to play
the song, I'd suggest you add some Gary Davis to your library of music. It's well worth it.
